Etymology. Origin of Word Garhwal : Garhwal originally word is “Gahadaval” which was a dynasty which name “Gahadaval dynasty”. Kanak Pal was the ruler of Chandpur Garhi, Chamoli in 823 AD whose descendants later conquered 52 garh to make the kingdom of Garhwal.

The divide grew during British rule. While much of Garhwal was ruled by native kings until the 20th century, Kumaon became the centre of British activities and modern education. In 1889, Kumaon became a commissionerate that included parts of Garhwal too. Garhwal became a separate commissionerate in 1967.
