Why do cars move when not pressing gas?

The automatic transmission is in drive and is connected not mechanically but fluidly. So when braking in gear this connections gives but release the brake and the car moves a little. Increase the engine speed and the connection gets stronger and the car moves faster.

What does pressing the gas pedal do?

Gas Pedal. When you step on the gas pedal you initiate a process that delivers air and fuel to the engine. As the gas pedal is pressed, it turns a pivot that in turn pulls the throttle wire. That linkage serves to control a valve that regulates the air intake to the engine.
