My personal taste is that the better parts of Santiago to live are in the neighborhoods / communas Bellas Artes, Las Condes, Providencia, Bellavista, Vitacura, and Lo Barnechea. They are more expensive zones to live in, and therefore they manage to keep they’re neighborhoods modern, safe and pretty.

If you are on a budget, downtown in the so called “Barrio Universitario” is a good place to live. It’s a nice, secure and not so expensive area, and you can find many apartments for rent at reasonable prizes. The area is nice (in a urban way), but it’s better to be discreet, most of all at the evenings and in the night.

Providencia is an excellent place for living but can get expensive in some parts such as near El Golf. If you can afford it and want something a little nicer, Las Condes and Vitacura and a little “newer” and maybe better for families.
