What rules do nuns have?

Catholic nuns take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience; the three evangelical counsels of perfection in Christianity. Some orders also take a fourth vow. Although sister and nun are often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between the two types of Catholic women religious.

What do nuns follow?

They take the three vows–poverty, chastity and obedience–which flow from the evangelical counsels of Jesus Christ. The vow of poverty leads a nun to imitate Jesus who for our sake became poor, although he was rich. It helps her to be poor in spirit as well as in fact, and to live a life of labor and moderation.

What are the additional rules for nuns called?

These rules are called the vinaya, meaning ‘discipline’.

Are nuns allowed to hug?

They do not hug one another and keep all physical contact to a minimum. Most of them rarely, if ever, see their families. These are not the nuns we are familiar with, called apostolic nuns, who teach or minister to the poor.

What are the restrictions of being a nun?

Below are just a few of the most common restrictions nuns (especially within the Christian tradition) have to follow: You must take a vow of chastity, which means you cannot get married or have sexual/romantic relationships. You must take a vow of poverty, which means you must live a simple life.

How are the vows interpreted by different orders of nuns?

Different Orders or Congregations interpret the vows differently and emphasize different aspects. For example, I was a member of the Order of Saint Clare, the Poor Clares. One of the things that Poor Clares stress is the vow of poverty.

What is the difference between a ‘nun’ and a sister?

A lot of people use the terms ‘nun’ and ‘sister’ interchangeably. This is because a lot of nuns go by ‘Sister [Name]’. But there’s actually a major difference between the two. The term ‘nun’ is applied to women who have taken serious, solemn vows to live a simple life in a convent or monastery.

How do nuns spend their time between sessions of prayer?

Between the frequent sessions of prayer, the nuns took the opportunity to interact with young people and other nuns from around the world, playing sports and sightseeing. A nun gets ready early in the morning. Nuns are obliged to wear their ecclesiastic clothes at all times. The only time they do not wear their tunics is when they are sleeping
