What is the purpose of interstage cooling?

Interstage cooler is used for cooling between various stages of the compressor and After Cooler is used for cooling the final stage of compression. It is widely used in gas compression stations and Booster compression stations of various gases particularly for Natural Gas.

What is the purpose of inter cooling in a compressor?

Functions of Intercoolers The air compressor intercooler’s main function is to cool air before it enters the next stage of compression. The higher density of cool air makes it easier to compress than hot air. Ideally, the air should be as close to the ambient air temperature as possible.

Why inter coolers are required for multi stage reciprocating compressors?

In multistage compressors, with each compression cycle, the pressure increases, which leads to an increase in temperature. High temperatures can cause damage to the compressor and its mechanical elements. Thus, it is essential to reduce the air temperature.

Why multistage is done in reciprocating air compressor explain the working of double stage single acting reciprocating air compressor?

In single stage compressor, entire compression of air takes place in single stroke of the piston. In two stage compressor, initial compression takes place in the low pressure cylinder. Air from this stage (low pressure cylinder) is passed through the inter cooler to reduce the temperature.

Why do stage hydrogen compressor need interstage cooling?

Since compression generates heat, the compressed gas needs to be cooled between stages, making the compression less adiabatic and more isothermal. The compressed gas from the compressor is hot after compression, often 70-200°C.

When water inter cooling is used in a multistage compression it?

3. The water intercooling reduces the work to be done in low pressure compression. Explanation: The water intercooling reduces the work to be done in high pressure compression. It also reduces the specific volume of refrigerant which requires a compressor of small size.

What are the advantages of cooling of compressed air between stages?

The intercooling stage of two-stage compression creates less chance of overheating, which in turn means more uptime and better productivity. Less moisture buildup. Cooler air has a lower moisture content. Moisture in compressed air can lead to equipment failure and premature wear.

Why are inter coolers used in gas turbine?

The addition of intercoolers in gas turbine cycles reduces the compression work, and this is achieved by dividing the compression processes into two or more stages, and the exit air/gas from each stage is cooled by the intercooler/heat exchanger to the minimum cycle temperature.

Why Inter-cooling is done in a gas turbine power plant?

Gas Turbine Cycle with Inter-cooling The cooling of air between two stages of compression is known as intercooling. This reduces the work of compression and increases the specific output of the plant with a decrease in the thermal efficiency.

Why are multistage compressors used?

Need for temperature control: Multi-stage compressors can regulate air temperature. Because they cool air as it passes between each chamber, the output air has a lower temperature. When heat can damage or reduce the efficiency of your air-powered equipment, choose a multi-stage compressor.

Why do you need a multistage compressor?

Necessity of multistage compression i) As index of compression ‘n’ increases it increases compression work. ii) Increase in pressure ratio (P2/P1) it increases work as well as size of cylinder. Due to above pointes and for higher pressure ratio compressor needs multistaging.

Why does compressed air needs to be cooled?

Since compression generates heat, the compressed gas needs to be cooled between stages, making the compression less adiabatic and more isothermal. The compressed gas from the compressor is hot after compression, often 70-200°C. An aftercooler is used to lower the temperature, which also results in condensation.
