What is the difference between hexagonal close packing and cubic close packing?

The hexagonal close packing is denoted as HCP. This arrangement has two layers of spheres in one repeating unit. The key difference between hexagonal close packing and cubic close packing is that, a unit cell of hexagonal close packing has 6 spheres whereas a unit cell of cubic close packing has 4 spheres.

Why it is called hexagonal close packing?

The atoms from one layer nest themselves in the empty space between the atoms of the adjacent layer, just like in the fcc structure. However, instead of being a cubic structure, the pattern is hexagonal.

What is CCP arrangement?

The cubic closed packing is CCP, FCC is cubic structures entered for face. The unit cell consists of four layers of atoms in a cubic close-packed (ccp) arrangement of atoms. The layers at the top and bottom (a) contain six atoms at the hexagon corners and one atom at the middle of each hexagon.

Is FCC close packed?

An FCC structure has close packed octahedral planes, but these are tilted relative to the crystal axes. The FCC structure is made up of layers of octahedral,-type planes.

How will you distinguish between hexagonal and tetrahedral close packed?

When the fourth layer is kept over the third layer, the arrangement of particles in this layer is similar to that in layer A. Hence, we can say that the layers in cubic close-packing are arranged in an ABCABC….. pattern….

Why hexagonal close packing is more efficient than square close packing explain?

In the hexagonal close packing the particles in the 2nd row are fitted into the depressions of the 1st row. So the space occupied by the spheres in hexagonal close packing is more than in square close packing and hence it is more efficient. Hope this helps.

In which pair most efficient packing is present?

Thus, the correct answer is (B) hcp and ccp structures have the efficient close packing.

Is HCP denser than FCC?

The FCC and HCP packings are the densest known packings of equal spheres with the highest symmetry (smallest repeat units). Denser sphere packings are known, but they involve unequal sphere packing. A packing density of 1, filling space completely, requires non-spherical shapes, such as honeycombs.

Is CCP equal to FCC?

-bcc stands for body centered cell and the coordination number is 8. -fcc stands for face centered cell and the coordination number is 12. -ccp stands for cubic close packed and the coordination number is 12….The Coordination number of bcc, fcc, ccp, hcp is:

Type of packing Packing efficiency No. of atoms per unit cell
fcc 74\% 4
ccp 74\% 6
hcp 74\% 6

Is FCC or CCP same?

Face Centered Cubic (fcc) or Cubic Close Packed (ccp) These are two different names for the same lattice.

Is FCC stronger than BCC?

Thus FCC metals deform easier than BCC metals and thus they are more ductile. BCC metals are infact stronger than FCC metals.

Is graphite a HCP?

Graphite has hcp arrangement of carbon atoms and the parallel planes are 3.35 A apart.
