What is power and how it is being used in refrigeration and air conditioning?

Refrigerators use energy (usually electricity) to transfer heat from the cool interior of the refrigerator to the relatively warm surroundings of your home; likewise, an air conditioner uses energy to transfer heat from the interior of your home to the relatively warm outside environment.

How does refrigeration AC work?

The compressor changes liquid refrigerant into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas. The refrigerant moves to the outside coil of the air conditioner and releases its heat there through condensation, cooling down. This siphons heat from the air, cooling it down.

How does an air conditioner use electricity?

Inside the evaporator coil, the refrigerant evaporates and creates a gas that gets pumped back into the compressor, expelling heat outside and sending cool air flowing throughout your home. This complex system requires a lot of energy to run, and the cooler you keep your AC the more electricity it requires.

Why does AC consume more power?

The air filters keep the dust out of your AC HVAC system allowing it to run smoothly. They block the dust and let the clean air inside the AC to be cooled. However, with day to day usage, these filters get clogged with dust and make the AC work harder to get the air inside which often leads to high power consumption.

How does power electronics work?

The primary element in a power electronic system is a switching power converter. The power converter consists of power semiconductor devices that are turned on and off at high frequencies. This operation switches the voltage and current through the devices, delivering a controlled power at the output.

How is refrigeration different from air conditioning?

In refrigeration, there is a transfer of thermal energy from a place at a cold temperature to a place at a higher temperature. In AC, thermal energy is taken away to keep the air at a cool temperature. The refrigeration parts include a compressor, condenser, and evaporator in one unit.

Is air conditioner an electronic device?

When you say “air conditioner” I assume you are talking window units. We see these as consumer electronics because they are! If you can buy it from a store and plug it in, it’s a consumer electronic device.
