What is mood profiling?

Mood profiling is a popular method of quantifying and classifying feeling states. The six hypothesized mood profiles (i.e., iceberg, inverse Everest, inverse iceberg, shark fin, submerged, and surface profiles) were identified clearly.

What does Profile of Mood States measure?

The Profile of Mood States evaluates mood by focusing on tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, vigor-activity, fatigue-inertia, and confusion-bewilderment on a five-point scale.

What is a profile of moods questionnaire?

POMS is a standard validated psychological test formulated by McNair et al. (1971). The questionnaire contains 65 words/statements that describe the feelings people have. The test requires you to indicate for each word or statement how you have been feeling in the past week, including today.

What does a POMS test measure?

The second edition of the Profile of mood states scale is known as the POMS-short form. POMS measures six different dimensions of mood swings over a period of time. These include: Tension or Anxiety, Anger or Hostility, Vigor or Activity, Fatigue or Inertia, Depression or Dejection, Confusion or Bewilderment.

Labile mood or emotional lability is a condition that causes uncontrollable crying or laughing at an improper time or situation. The definition of the word ‘labile’ is “readily or continually undergoing chemical, physical, or biological change or breakdown“, in other words, unstable.

About The Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) Reference: It is a 24-item questionnaire of simple mood descriptors such as angry, nervous, unhappy, and energetic. The BRUMS has six subscales, with each of the subscales containing four mood descriptors. The subscales are anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension, and vigour.

How are Poms scored?

Each adjective in the POMS questionnaire is awarded the following score: 0 – Not at all. 1 – A little….except “Relaxed” and “Efficient” and they score the reverse:

  1. 4 – Not at all.
  2. 3 – A little.
  3. 2 – Moderately.
  4. 1 – Quite a Lot.
  5. 0 – Extremely.

How is the POMS test scored?

Scoring for POMS A Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) can be calculated by adding the raw scores from tension, depression, anger, fatigue and confusion and then subtracting the vigour score. This will give a value between –24 and 177, with lower scores indicative of people with more stable mood profiles.

How is the Profile of Mood States scored?

The total mood disturbance score was computed by adding the five negative subscale scores (tension-anxiety, depression, anger-hostility, vigor, fatigue, and confusion) and subtracting the vigor score. Higher scores for the total mood disturbance score indicate a greater degree of mood disturbance.

The SCAT is a timed, two-part test that contains math and verbal sections in a multiple-choice format. Since 1985, the Center for Talented Youth has identified talented students in elementary grades using the SCAT. In 1996, CTY computerized the SCAT and made it available at Prometric test centers.

The Profile of Mood States 2nd Edition (POMS 2) was published in 2012 by Multi-Health Systems (MHS) to assess transient feelings and mood among individuals aged 13 years and above. For clinical practitioners, the POMS 2 instruments can monitor change in mood disturbance during or following intervention.

The iceberg profile in sport is a visual representation of desirable emotional health status, characterized by low raw scores on the tension, depression, anger, fatigue, and confusion scales and above norms (the “water line”) on vigor as assessed by the Profile of Mood States (POMS).
