Do colleges care about National Merit semifinalists?

Your SAT and ACT scores are far more important to colleges; your National Merit status does not add much new information. However, having a high number of enrolled Semifinalists is seen as a badge of honor at some colleges and will factor in their admission decisions.

How hard is it to get National Merit Scholarship?

Winning a National Merit Scholarship is a fairly difficult undertaking. Each year, the NMSC screens approximately 1.5 million qualifying entrants. If you reach Semifinalist status, your odds of becoming a Merit Scholar Finalist are extremely high. In fact, 95 percent of Semifinalists become Finalists.

How many National Merit semifinalists become finalists?

Semifinalists are invited to complete the National Merit Scholarship Application, which includes writing an essay. Of the 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 will be considered Finalists. About half of the Finalists will eventually be chosen as Merit Scholarship winners.

  • How do you become a National Merit Scholar?

    The first step to becoming a National Merit scholar is to achieve a top score on the PSAT , which is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). You must take the PSAT in October of your junior year of high school. So, in order to qualify as a National Merit scholar, you must be enrolled as a high school student.

    When are National Merit Semifinalists announced?

    Semifinalists must also excel in the classroom and receive a high score on the SAT. About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to reach the finalist level, and half of the finalists will win a national merit scholarship. Finalists will be announced in February, followed by winners in spring 2017.

    How do you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship?

    To qualify for a National Merit Scholarship, students must take the PSAT, usually during the junior year of high school. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation states that students need to take the PSAT in the “specified year of your high school program and no later than the third year in grades 9 through 12.”.
