The Reserve Bank of India The RBI is permitted to print currency up to 10,000 rupee notes. To deter counterfeiting and fraud, the Indian government withdrew the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes from circulation in 2016.

On what basis does the RBI print notes and currencies?

Printing of currency notes in India is done on the basis of Minimum Reserve System (MRS). This system is applicable in India since 1956. According to this system, the Reserve Bank of India has to maintain assets of at least 200 crore rupees all the times.

How many currency notes can RBI issue?

If RBI does so, it can issue as many as currency notes it wants to. There is no limit on the amount of currency RBI can issue by keeping the reserve. Now, the question arises, why it doesnt issue a lot of them so that everybody gets rich.

Also, practically, there is no maximum limit on printing money, but if RBI prints more than people are willing to borrow, then value of currency will automatically g RBI prints rupee as much as it is required by all the borrowers collectively in India plus the amount any other country is willing to accept as its ForeEx reserve.

There are various aspects which the RBI needs to take in consideration before printing any currency. Some of the important ones are:- 1) Current Inflation :- If the country is facing inflation, the RBI will check on the supply of the currency and therefore print nothing. The currency circulation needs to be reduced in case of inflation.
