Is making ice from tap water safe?
The answer, briefly, is no — freezing will not make your water safe to drink. Freezing does damage living cells, mostly because water expands when freezing, and ice crystals can break the cell walls.
Is ice drinkable?
In fact, Ice can and will go bad. Because it is a type of frozen food, ice can become contaminated with bacteria – from Salmonella and E. coli to Hepatitis A – that can cause illness. But we rarely think of the consumption of this “forgotten food” as a possible cause of a foodborne illness.
Is ice made from tap water?

Our senses are valuable tool when looking for contaminants in drinking water. Water that’s safe to drink should ideally be clear with no odor or funny taste. If your tap water tastes metallic, smells fishy, or comes out cloudy, it could signal the presence of unsafe contaminants.
Does ice go bad?
They can be stored for a couple years or more with no noticeable affect on flavor, if they are in a sealed bag or container with no air in it. If they are loose in a bowl, open to the air in the freezer, they will take on freezer flavors and shrink over a relatively short time.
Can ice have germs?
But they can. Bacteria and viruses such as listeria, E-coli and salmonella can live in freezing temperatures, meaning they may be alive in your ice cubes. With proper precautions however, you can eliminate the risk of these contaminants existing in the ice you serve.
Why does ice explode?
A perfectly spherical droplet of water that freezes from the outside, forms a shell first. This has the diameter of the droplet. As the shell thickens inward, the remaining water ‘gets a problem’: it wants to expand, but is confined by the shell. After some time, this causes the droplet to explode.
Is water considered food?
Water is a food as defined in section 20l(f) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (2l USC 32l(f)). It is a normal constituent of many foods and is essential in the preparation and processing of most commercially prepared foods.
