In 1949 it became a republic and left the British Commonwealth. The Protestant majority and Catholic minority in Northern Ireland were in conflict almost from the beginning.

It began because of the 1916 Easter Rising. The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) men who fought the British soldiers that day wanted Ireland to be its own country and wanted Britain to move its army out of Ireland. The Unionists wanted to stay under control of the British Government.

Ireland does not want a war with anybody. Ireland, withoutside help, could not evict the UK from Northern Ireland. A lot of people in Northern Ireland threaten civil war if the province is handed over to Dublin. It would cause uproar and decent people just want to get on with their lives.

Why do people say ‘Ireland’ instead of “Ireland”?

The same misunderstanding arises when people say “Ireland” in reference to the whole island, either failing to identify the two individual countries that make up for the total territory, or using it as short for the Republic of Ireland.

The city compares poorly even with British provincial cities such as Liverpool and Manchester (both of which are significantly larger than Dublin). The best thing about Ireland is its countryside, not its cities.

Ireland can’t even provide housing for its population. Due to a lack of regulations and planning you have now one of the biggest issue. Landlords raise prices to an obscene amount every year yet the quality is as cheap as what you can find in 3rd world countries (i lived in one for 5 years).
