Is camping gas and propane the same thing?

These tanks are frequently referred to as “camping gas” in some areas. But to make it even more confusing, they are also called LPG, BBQ gas, patio gas, bottled gas, propane, LP gas, or many other names depending on the area you live.

What is camping white gas?

White gas (aka “naphtha,” “100\% light hydro treated distillate,” or “Coleman Fuel”) is the first choice for most people in North America whether they’re headed out for a summer weekend or for a month-long winter expedition in the Alaska Range. Almost any pressurized-type liquid fuel stove will run well on white gas.

Is white gas the same as Butane?

In the UK, ‘Coleman fuel’ is same as what is known as ‘White Gas’ in America. ‘Propane’ and ‘Butane’ are two universal terms for two different chemical compounds. (Some people find it hard to understand what this means, So, it means, Propane is not equal to Butane, those are two different chemical comppounds.

Which gas is best for camping?

Propane works when it gets cold. Unfortunately for Butane, the gas condenses when it gets cold and won’t flow (no early morning brew!). So, if you are planning on any winter camping, propane gas is the only way to go.

Can you BBQ with propane gas?

So, if you want a quick, convenient and easy way of cooking on your gas BBQ, propane is an excellent choice. Ease of use – again, like butane, propane gas is an easy to use fuel source. Simply connect the gas bottle to your BBQ, allow the gas to reach the appliance, hit the ignition switch and you’re cooking on gas!

Is white gas and unleaded gas the same?

White gas is basically the first distillation of gasoline. It has no additives. Unleaded gasoline has additives including octane. Either will work in the lantern.

How long does white gas last?

White gas can last for a very long time when stored properly. Some people had white gas last as much as 30 years. However, Coleman recommends a shelf life of 5-7 years unopened and 2 years opened. Always store your white gas in a proper container and inspect for leaks and rust.

Which is better white gas or propane?

Propane is superior in cold tolerance, fuel efficiency per lb, ease of use, safety in storage, and is also easier to buy. White gas is better for planning exact amounts of fuel to bring, which is mostly important for backpackers or long term campers.

Can I use propane on my camping stove?

Camping stoves like the GasOne GS-3400P are capable of using either propane or butane for cooking. This is a super convenient option! As it turns out, a lot of stoves actually run on a blend of propane and butane. Propane can burn at MUCH lower temperatures than butane (because of its higher vapor pressure).

What is the difference between white gas and propane?

Both of them are petroleum distillates. They are usually used for camping, mostly for lighting and cooking. Although white gas is in liquid form at room temperature, propane is gaseous. However, propane is usually compressed, stored, and transported as a liquid.

This is subjective and depends on individual use and season. In all fairness, propane provides less of a hassle and is easier to use. But if you intend to go backpacking, it is recommended that you get a white gas stove (single burner).

Is propane the same as kerosene in the UK?

Here in the UK we have ‘Coleman fuel’ (which is what Americans call ‘white gas’), ‘propane’ and ‘butane’ are the same as in the USA, US ‘kerosene’ is UK ‘paraffin’, US ‘gasoline’ is UK ‘petrol’. In the UK we also have ‘white spirit’ which should not be confused with ‘white gas’, it’s not the same thing.
