Is a broken nose an emergency?

Broken noses are a medical emergency if: You cannot control bleeding. You have difficulty breathing. Other serious injuries are suspected, especially injuries of the spine or neck.

Can you go to the hospital for a broken nose?

Go to a hospital emergency room or see a health care provider immediately if: You cannot stop the nose from bleeding.

Will a broken nose go back to normal?

A broken nose usually heals on its own within 3 weeks. Get medical help if it’s not getting better or your nose has changed shape.

How do you snap your nose back into place?

Your doctor may treat a simple fracture by straightening the bone or cartilage in your nose, if it is crooked. Splints or nasal packing (packing the nose with gauze) also may be necessary. Surgery may be needed to treat a more complicated fracture. Your doctor may need to move the bone or cartilage back into place.

A broken nose is diagnosed through a physical exam and medical history. An X-ray of the nose may be done. If other facial injuries or fractures are suspected, a CT scan will be done. Your doctor may wish to delay evaluation until the swelling has gone down.

Should I go to the doctor for a broken nose?

Often, a broken nose will heal on its own and will not require medical attention. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical care: Severe head or neck pain accompanied by vomiting, numbness or tingling in the arms, and/or loss of consciousness.

Common causes of a broken nose are trauma caused by fights, sports, falls, and accidents. Symptoms of a fractured nose can include: Tenderness, swelling, and bruising on and around the nose and eyes.

How long does it take to realign a broken nose?

Manual realignment. If the break has displaced the bones and cartilage in your nose, your doctor may be able to manually realign them. This needs to be done within 14 days from when the fracture occurred, preferably sooner.

What type of doctor should I See for nose surgery?

If you have some findings that could be improved through surgery then this could be done by an Otolaryngologist or a Facial Plastic Surgeon. In Ontario, if you’d like your nose treated under OHIP then you’ll need to have a referral from your family doctor. This referral can be made to the provider of your choice.
