How to robots navigate?

In local navigation techniques, sensors are usually employed to control the orientation and position of robot. For such use, LIDAR sensor is frequently used for automation purpose. LIDAR works independently as compared to GPS system; therefore, it has the capability of mapping the environment.

How do robots know their own location?

Distinctively, absolute positioning sensors recognize structures on the environment which position is known, allowing the robot to estimate its own position. Odometry uses encoders to measure the rotation of the wheels, which allows the robot to estimate its position and heading according to its model.

How do robots navigate themselves?

Vision-based navigation or optical navigation uses computer vision algorithms and optical sensors, including laser-based range finder and photometric cameras using CCD arrays, to extract the visual features required to the localization in the surrounding environment.

This plan may have to accommodate the estimated or communicated intentions of other autonomous robots in order to prevent collisions, while considering the dynamics of the robot’s own movement envelope.
