Do pilots work for the airline or the airport?

Airline pilots work primarily for airlines that transport passengers and cargo on a fixed schedule. The captain or pilot in command, usually the most experienced pilot, supervises all other crew members and has primary responsibility for the flight.

Do you get to choose your base as a pilot?

Bidding — Pilots choose their aircraft, schedules and bases by bidding. Airlines periodically post vacancies to fill captain or first officer positions at various domiciles. Airlines also post in advance the unassigned monthly flight schedules, and pilots can bid the schedules they prefer.

Why do some airlines hire pilots from other countries?

Some airlines are growing faster than they can find pilots in their home base. They then look for expat pilots; pilots from other countries willing to fly for them. That can be under a temporary contract, until they have found enough “of their own people”, or it can be with a permanent or open contract.

Can a military pilot become a commercial pilot?

Military pilots may transfer to civilian aviation and apply directly to airlines to become airline pilots. Education Airline pilots typically need a bachelor’s degree in any subject, along with a commercial pilot’s license and an ATP certificate from the FAA.

How many flight hours do you need to become a pilot?

When pilots have built enough flying hours, they can apply to the airlines. Newly hired pilots at regional airlines are typically required to have about 1,500 hours of flight experience. Many commercial piloting jobs have minimum requirements of around 500 hours.

How do pilots choose which aircraft they want to fly?

If they want to fly a 737, they learn and become qualified in a 737. So they can choose which types of aircraft they want to fly. Then they can join a company that has a fleet of aircraft that suits them. For example if they are qualified in 737–800 and 747, but prefer 737–800, they could join Ryanair, which only has 737–800.
