Can you raise doves for meat?

Common pigeon breeds raised for meat production include white king, red Carneau, French Mondain, and giant homers. Young pigeons bred for meat are called squab . Usually , squab have yet to fly and consume only “pigeon milk,” which is formed in the crop of the parents during brooding.

Pigeons and doves belong to the same family of birds (Columbidae), which consists of more than 300 species of birds. They share similar features like thick and round bodies, short necks and thin peaks, but doves are generally of a smaller stature while pigeons are often larger and stubbier.

What type of cage do doves need?

Keep doves in an enclosure large enough for them to stretch their wings, climb and play. The cage should be at least 18 x 22 x 18 inches (46 x 56 x 46 cm). The bigger the enclosure the better, especially if it will house multiple doves.

How do you raise doves?

Position the doves’ housing high enough so it’s easy access for the one caring for the birds. Provide water for baths. Doves like their living quarters to be dry, but they do like taking baths. Providing them with water once per week helps to wash away any parasites.
