Are true bass voices rare?

Unfortunately, a true and pure bass voice is very, very rare, which explains the rather small repertoire written for it. It is suspected that only five percent of all men who sing bass actually have a true bass voice.

How can you distinguish a true bass voice from a bass baritone voice?

The distinctions will be in the upper range tonality (somewhere over Middle C). A bass-baritone will have a slightly easier sounding tonality in the upper notes whereas a bass voice will sound a bit more distressed and thinner on those same notes.

Baritones are between bass and tenor because it is literally the voice type that connects the two. Notes from the baritone range overlap the bass notes and the tenor notes. A common range for baritones is from A2 to A4.
