Are discrete random variables always integers?

discrete random variable: obtained by counting values for which there are no in-between values, such as the integers 0, 1, 2, …. probability distribution: A function of a discrete random variable yielding the probability that the variable will have a given value.

Do discrete values have to be integers?

There is no restriction on a discreate random variable that it has to take integer values. In reality, however, most of the discrete random variables represents counts or ranks. Since these can be represented by integers, most of the discrete random variables take these values.

Can 0 be a discrete random variable?

A discrete random variable is one which may take on only a countable number of distinct values such as 0,1,2,3,4,…….. Discrete random variables are usually (but not necessarily) counts.

What does an expected value of 0 mean?

Neutral Expected Value Games The expected value in this scenario is (-1 * 1/2) + (1 * 1/2) = 0. Thus, since the coin is fair and the loss amount equals the gain amount, you are expected to neither gain nor lose money over time. In such a game, while there is no reason to play, there is also no reason not to play.

Are integers discrete or continuous?

Integers are discrete, not continuous, but to treat them as nominal categories would throw out most of the information, and even treating them as ordinal could lose quite a bit.

What is the expected value of a discrete random variable?

For a discrete random variable the expected value is calculated by summing the product of the value of the random variable and its associated probability, taken over all of the values of the random variable.

What are discrete numbers?

Discrete data is information that can only take certain values. These values don’t have to be whole numbers (a child might have a shoe size of 3.5 or a company may make a profit of £3456.25 for example) but they are fixed values – a child cannot have a shoe size of 3.72!

Which of the following is not discrete random variable?

Blood type is not a discrete random variable because it is categorical. Continuous random variables have numeric values that can be any number in an interval. For example, the (exact) weight of a person is a continuous random variable. Foot length is also a continuous random variable.
