Does a sequence converge if it is bounded?

Note that a sequence being bounded is not a sufficient condition for a sequence to converge. For example, the sequence \(\displaystyle {(−1)^n}\) is bounded, but the sequence diverges because the sequence oscillates between \(\displaystyle 1\) and \(\displaystyle −1\) and never approaches a finite number.

How do you prove a convergent sequence is bounded?

Every convergent sequence is bounded. Proof. Let (sn) be a sequence that converges to s ∈ R. Applying the definition to ε = 1, we see that there is N ∈ N such that for any n>N, |sn −s| < 1, which then implies that |sn|≤|s|+1.

Can a sequence be bounded but not convergent?

No, there are many bounded sequences which are not convergent, for example take an enumeration of Q∩(0,1). But every bounded sequence contains a convergent subsequence.

Can a sequence be convergent and unbounded?

Boundedness of Convergent Sequence : Therefore, an unbounded sequence cannot be convergent.

How do you show a sequence is bounded?

A sequence is bounded if it is bounded above and below, that is to say, if there is a number, k, less than or equal to all the terms of sequence and another number, K’, greater than or equal to all the terms of the sequence. Therefore, all the terms in the sequence are between k and K’.

How do you show a sequence is bounded below?

If the sequence is both bounded below and bounded above we call the sequence bounded.

  1. Note that in order for a sequence to be increasing or decreasing it must be increasing/decreasing for every n .
  2. A sequence is bounded below if we can find any number m such that m≤an m ≤ a n for every n .

How do you prove bounded?

How do you show an increasing sequence is bounded?

Is it true that a bounded sequence which contains a convergent subsequence is convergent?

Proof: Every sequence in a closed and bounded subset is bounded, so it has a convergent subsequence, which converges to a point in the set, because the set is closed. Conversely, every bounded sequence is in a closed and bounded set, so it has a convergent subsequence.

How do you know if a set is bounded?

A set S is bounded if it has both upper and lower bounds. Therefore, a set of real numbers is bounded if it is contained in a finite interval.

How do you know if its bounded above or below?

A set is bounded above by the number A if the number A is higher than or equal to all elements of the set. A set is bounded below by the number B if the number B is lower than or equal to all elements of the set.
