Will a 9th gen CPU work on a 6th gen motherboard?

No, you can’t put a 9th gen CPU in a 6th gen socket. There’s a reason chipsets have different numbers like Z170 Z270 Z370 etc.

Intel is very notorious in that case. They release a new chipset for every two generations and cut off support for previous generation chipset. You will need a 200 series motherboard chipset to make it work with your seventh gen processor. You can try the used market. I don’t think you will be able to buy a 200 series chipset motherboard now.
