After the battle of Lade’ (BC 494) the Phoenicians were employed by the Persians in the reduction of the islands of the ^Egean, and of various cities on the European shores of the Propontis and the Straits. In the sea-fight, the Phoenicians, though they could not avert defeat, showed much gallantry.
