Why was snoke killed off?

While pursuing his objectives to destroy both the Resistance and Skywalker, however, Snoke was assassinated by Ren, who sought to rule the galaxy as the new Supreme Leader. With his death, Snoke’s purpose had been fulfilled in capacity his master Sidious intended.

Why is snoke so big in force awakens?
