Why there is only 0.4\% of oxygen in the exhaust gases that come out of the car engine?

(a) The air going into the engine contains about 20\% of oxygen. Explain why there is only 0.4\% of oxygen in the exhaust gases coming out of the car engine….

gas \% volume
carbon monoxide carbon dioxide oxygen other gases 3.0 13.0 0.4 83.6

Does internal combustion engine need air?

Each time the fuel ignites is called the combustion, or power, stroke. Beyond the combustion stroke, which pushes the piston down from the top of the cylinder, there are three other strokes: intake, compression, and exhaust. Engines need air (namely oxygen) to burn fuel.

Can we use oxygen as a fuel?

Oxy-fuel combustion is the process of burning a fuel using pure oxygen, or a mixture of oxygen and recirculated flue gas, instead of air. Since the nitrogen component of air is not heated, fuel consumption is reduced, and higher flame temperatures are possible.

Why not use pure oxygen instead of nitrous?

Injecting pure oxygen could cause any hot reactive surfaces to immediately combust. Liquid oxygen especially would cause hot carbon spots to instantly burn, risking melting and burning the piston and rings. Superchargers rob enormous amounts of horsepower, nitrous does not.

Is there oxygen in exhaust?

Because fuel is balanced to the incoming air, the combustion process will use up almost all the oxygen being ingested by the engine, and pure exhaust gas contains very little residual O2– usually less than 0.5\% for Propane fueled engines.

What gas comes out of exhaust?

Passenger car emissions summary

Component Emission Rate Annual pollution emitted
Carbon monoxide 20.9 grams/mile (13.06 g/km) 575 pounds (261 kg)
NOx 1.39 grams/mile (0.87 g/km) 38.2 pounds (17.3 kg)
Carbon dioxide – greenhouse gas 415 grams/mile (258 g/km) 11,450 pounds (5,190 kg)

How is air used in an internal combustion engine Why is airflow in and out of an engine so important?

The function of the air intake system is to allow air to reach your car engine. Oxygen in the air is one of the necessary ingredients for the engine combustion process. A good air intake system allows for clean and continuous airflow into the engine, thereby achieving more power and better mileage for your car.

Can a engine run on air?

Yes, it could. You could compress the air at your house using an air compressor, fill a compressed-air tank in the car, and the car could run off of it. You could use an engine very similar to a steam engine (using pressurized air instead of pressurized steam) to convert the compressed air to rotational energy.

How does oxygen affect combustion?

When a fuel is burned, oxygen in the combustion air chemically combines with the hydrogen and carbon in the fuel to form water and carbon dioxide, releasing heat in the process. An increase in oxygen in the combustion air can reduce the energy loss in the exhaust gases and increase heating system efficiency.

Why oxygen is not used as a fuel?

In order for a fuel cell to work, it needs an oxidizing agent. Scientists have now found a way to explain why oxygen does not always enter fuel cells effectively, rendering them unusable. Fuel cells use a simple chemical reaction, such as the combination of oxygen and hydrogen to form water, to generate electricity.

Can you use oxygen instead of nitrous?

Because oxygen is so bulky, what people use instead is nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide easily liquefies under pressure, so you can store a lot more of it in a bottle than you can gaseous oxygen, which does not liquefy.

What causes NOx in a car?

NOx (or nitrogen oxide) is a chemical in automotive exhaust that gets created when the temperature inside a vehicle engine’s combustion chamber exceeds 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a pollutant that helps create smog, acid rain and particulate pollution.

Can you use oxygen instead of nitrogen in a combustion engine?

There is ~15x more air than there is fuel in a cylinder just before ignition. Nitrogen is mostly inert during combustion, so replacing all the nitrogen with oxygen effectively mean You actually can use oxygen to combust an internal combustion engine instead of air.

Why can’t we use pure oxygen in a car engine?

Though only the oxygen present in the air takes part in the combustion process but other elements in the air help by scavenging out the combustion products from the combustion chamber during exhaust stroke. Use of pure oxygen will result in the scavenging process becoming extremely inefficient.

Would it take more oxygen tanks to power a car?

It would take more oxygen tanks than you could fit in your car to have enough oxygen to power your engine. The internal combustion engine in most cars burns gasoline. To do the burning, an engine needs oxygen, and the oxygen comes from the air all around us.

Can an IC engine run on pure oxygen instead of air?

In this answer, I wish to talk about the chemistry of using pure oxygen instead of standard air. There have been a number of claims that you can not run an IC engine on pure oxygen because there would be no exhaust gas or no nitrogen to act as a working fluid. Let us start by assuming optimal operation of the oxygen breathing engine.
