Development of Navi Mumbai Navi Mumbai was the brainchild of Adi Kanga, a civil engineer. With distinguished architect Charles Correa on board as the Chief Architect, ‘City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO)’ initiated the development of around 16,000 hectares of land to the north-east of Mumbai.
Navi Mumbai (Marathi: नवी मुंबई) is a Planned Satellite City on the west coast of the Indian state of Maharashtra.
It has an average city elevation of 14 meters, excluding forest area. The area was proposed in 1971 as a new urban township of Mumbai by the Government of Maharashtra. A new public sector undertaking, CIDCO, was established for this purpose. Navi Mumbai is situated across two districts, Thane Part and Raigad.
Why is Mumbai called ‘Bombay’?
‘Bombay’ is an anglicized version of the Portuguese name used by the British when they took control of the city in the 17th century.
Though we have witnessed few crime incidents, navi mumbai is still the safest as compared to Mumbai. Once upon a time navi mumbai was ridiculed as ‘gaav’ (village), today Mumbai is halfway submerged under water during monsoons while Navi mumbai is considered a planned city.
