Why is there no cure for spinal stenosis?

“Unfortunately, nothing can stop the progression of spinal stenosis, since it is due to daily wear and tear” said Dr. Hennenhoefer. “The symptoms of spinal stenosis typically respond to conservative treatments, including physical therapy and injections.”

Can anything be done for spinal stenosis?

There is no cure for spinal stenosis, but there are treatments to help relieve symptoms. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can ease swelling and pain. If they don’t do the trick, your doctor can prescribe higher-dose medication. Your doctor may also recommend cortisone injections.

What percentage of spinal stenosis surgeries are successful?

Successful results of surgery were achieved in 88.1\% of the patients with lumbar stenosis, 80\% of the patients with lumbar stenosis and disc herniation, and 58.7\% of the patients with lateral recess stenosis.

Can lumbar stenosis reversed?

While spinal stenosis can’t be reversed, treatment is available to address your pain.

What does a neurosurgeon do for spinal stenosis?

The most common surgery for lumbar stenosis is a decompressive laminectomy. In this procedure, an incision is made in the back and the lamina (back part of the bone over the spinal canal) is removed to create more space for the nerves.

What happens if a laminectomy doesn’t work?

In some cases, despite performing a laminectomy, patients experience pain because the spinal column itself is narrowed in a condition called spinal stenosis. Sometimes, there may be a small fragment of the disc still remaining following the laminectomy which can irritate the spinal-cord causing pain.

How do you prevent spinal stenosis from getting worse?

If you already have spinal stenosis, getting regular exercise and using proper body mechanics may help reduce the chances of your spinal stenosis from becoming worse. Exercise, when done properly, is a fantastic way to strengthen your spine and protect it from the everyday effects of wear and tear.
