Why is the Sun so heavy?
The Sun *does* have heavy elements (elements heavier than oxygen). This is because the Sun is massive enough that it’s able to hold onto large amounts of hydrogen and helium. So hydrogen and helium makes up a larger percentage of the Sun, and heavy elements make up a smaller percentage.
Why is the Sun a gas?
The sun is made up of a blazing combination of gases. These gases are actually in the form of plasma. About three quarters of the sun is hydrogen, which is constantly fusing together and creating helium by a process called nuclear fusion. Helium makes up almost the entire remaining quarter.
What keeps the Sun together since it is just gases?
In the sun’s core, gravitational forces create tremendous pressure and temperatures. Hydrogen atoms are compressed and fuse together, creating helium. This process is called nuclear fusion. As the gases heat up, atoms break apart into charged particles, turning the gas into plasma.
Why does the Sun not burn the earth?
The heat and light spreads out from the centre of the ball of gas toward the edges, and that’s what makes the Sun glow. So there is no normal “flame” in the Sun – at least not like the flames we have in a fire here on Earth – because the energy and light and heat is coming from the nuclear reaction.
Is the sun matter Yes or no?
It is, as all stars are, a hot ball of gas made up mostly of Hydrogen. The Sun is so hot that most of the gas is actually plasma, the fourth state of matter. The first state is a solid and it is the coldest state of matter. As we heat up the gas, atoms break apart into charged particles turning the gas into plasma.
What keeps the sun together?
Structure. The Sun is a huge ball of hydrogen and helium held together by its own gravity.
How does the sun work without oxygen?
The Sun does not “burn”, like we think of logs in a fire or paper burning. The Sun glows because it is a very big ball of gas, and a process called nuclear fusion is taking place in its core. Hydrogen really doesn’t burn, it fuses, into helium. So no oxygen is required!
Is the sun just fire?
No, the Sun is not fire, and does not contain fire. The Sun is fueled by thermonuclear fusion reactions. Fire is a chemical reaction. The sun is made of Helium, Hydrogen and small amounts of Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen.
