Why is the cornea transparent but the sclera opaque?

The cornea is designed to act as a sort of lens to focus light on the pupil. So that’s about it…the sclera is opaque because it is not meant to let in light and doesn’t have to be clear. The cornea needs to be clear to help focus the light.

Is the sclera of the eye transparent?

Better known as “the white of the eye,” the sclera is an opaque, white-colored layer of tissue that covers the surface of the eyeball.

Why is the sclera white and the cornea clear?

The sclera gives the eyeball its white color. The cornea and sclera are made of the same type of collagen fibers. In the cornea, the fibers are arranged in sheets and layers which makes the cornea clear. In the sclera, the fibers are arranged randomly.

Is the sclera visible?

Is the cornea transparent or opaque?

The cornea and sclera make up the outer tunic of the eye. Each is a connective tissue containing collagen fibrils embedded in a proteoglycan-rich extrafibrillar matrix, but whereas the cornea is uniquely transparent, the sclera is totally opaque.
