Social norms can become problematic when they encourage behavior that is damaging to certain groups. Racism and sexism have both been social norms at various times. Because social norms often do not have a specific reasoning behind them, they can be more difficult to change than explicit rules such as laws.
Deviance is defined as “nonconformity to a set of norms that are accepted by a significant number of people in a community or society.” More simply put, if group members do not follow a norm, they become labeled as a deviant.
Why should social norms break?
Without breaking norms, we may not be able to solve problems in society and prompt positive social change. Social norms create social order – by giving us those guidelines for behavior, most of which we do follow most of the time.

Abnormal behavior derives from repetitive deviant behavior failing to repent and seek having normal behavior. Challenging social norms are deviant.
What are cultural norms and why do they encourage violence?
Rules or expectations of behaviour – norms – within a cultural or social group can encourage violence. Interventions that challenge cultural and social norms supportive of violence can prevent acts of violence and have been widely used.
Social norms influence almost all aspects of our behaviour—including consent. Norms are enforced by members of the group, through social sanctions. Social norms aren’t perfect; some social norms can be fundamentally disrespectful. We should try to recognise and respond to disrespectful social norms. Why are social norms important?
Challenging social norms are deviant. The intent of the challenges is for abnormal behavior to be incredibly appealing, by modifying social norms using deflection. Once abnormal behavior becomes a behavioral disorder, the evaluation of it’s actions are described as pyschopathic behavior attempting to reproduce.
