What is Iridescence? Iridescence is a display of colours which is seen when white light reflects from structures on or in gemstones. In opal, prismatic colours are seen because spectral colours are separated. In labradorite and other gemstones, there are blended to produce interference colours.

If your opal’s colour change was caused by a change in humidity, then it will most likely return to its original colour. However, if its gotten something besides water on it somehow, then the change is permanent – rather like how tomato sauce stains plastic dishes when heated in the microwave.

Doublets and triplets usually look darker and more opaque than real opal as they have a non-opal layer attached to the back. Solid natural opals, in contrast, are transparent or white. From a side view, a real opal should look solid. Doublets and triplets, however, will look layered.
