Why is nichrome used instead of copper?

Nichrome being 100 times more resisistive than copper produces good amount of heat when current passed through it and it overcomes the usage of copper having low resistivity and high conductivity in heating coil.

Why is copper not used for heating coils?

Since copper is a good conductor of electricity, it offer less resistance. Low resistance offer less heating effect. Therefore copper is not used for heating coil.

Why is nichrome used as heating element in heating devices not copper?

Note: A nichrome wire is used as a heating element because of its high melting point and high resistivity (low conductivity) also. Having a high melting does not allow the nichrome wire to melt easily when a large amount of heat is produced. Hence, nichrome has high resistivity and low conductivity.

Can we use copper wire instead of Nichrome wire as resistance wire?

Copper cannot be used as a meter bridge wire because it has low resistance and high-temperature coefficient of resistivity.

Why resistivity of nichrome is more than copper?

Copper is a metal and thus has resistivity lower than that of an alloy and so lower than nichrome. H=I2Rt, where I is the current, R is the resistance and t is the time. And since resistance of nichrome is greater than that of copper. Hence, heat generated in the nichrome will be more than that of the copper.

Can we replace nichrome wire with a copper wire in heating appliances give reason for your answer?

A lot of heat is produced in the heating element because it is made of high resistance nichrome wire. A negligible heat is produced in the connecting wires of copper because copper has very low resistance.

Why nichrome is used as an element in heating applications?

Because of its low cost of manufacture, strength, ductility, resistance to oxidation, stability at high temperatures, and resistance to the flow of electrons, nichrome is widely used in electric heating elements in applications such as hair dryers and heat guns.

Can copper wire used in meter bridge?

Meter bridge is a device that is used to calculate the resistance(which is unknown) of a conductor. In meter-bridge, the principle that is used is called a wheatstone bridge. Thus, copper, due to its low resistance and high temperature coefficient of resistance, cannot be used in meter bridges.

Why is copper a heating element?

Subterranean heaters having copper core heating elements are disclosed. This core has a low resistance, which permits heating long intervals of subterranean earth with a reasonable voltage across the elements. Further, because copper is a malleable material, this heater is much more economical to fabricate.

Which are the metals used to make heating coil?

Nichrome: Most resistance wire heating elements usually use nichrome 80/20 (80\% Nickel, 20\% Chromium) wire, ribbon, or strip. Nichrome 80/20 is an ideal material, because it has relatively high resistance and forms an adherent layer of chromium oxide when it is heated for the first time.

Which has more resistivity Nichrome or copper?

Copper is a metal and thus has resistivity lower than that of an alloy and so lower than nichrome. And since resistance of nichrome is greater than that of copper. Hence, heat generated in the nichrome will be more than that of the copper.

Why nichrome coils are used for heating coil but not copper?

On the other hand, when a nichrome coil is used, its resistance being very high compared to copper, the current passed gets converted into the heat. That is why nichrome or kanthal coils are used for heating coil but not copper.

Why does the nichrome wire get heated up?

Since current i flowing in the two wires is the same, whereas nichrome wire has a very high resistance and copper wire has an almost negligible resistance, the heat produced in the nichrome wire is very high and almost no heat is produced in the copper wire. That is why nichrome wire gets heated up. The copper wire should not heat up perceptibly.

What happens when copper wire and nichrome wire are of same length?

So when nichrome and copper wire of same length and dia are subjected to equal voltage, copper heats less while nichrome heats more for the same time of operation. Should I hire remote software developers from Turing.com?

Is it possible to use copper wire as a heating element?

Yes you can use copper wire as a heating element . The generation of heat is dependent of things (according to joul’s law , power transfer to heat is [math]i^2 *r[/math] ) one you have to increase the current and other you have to increase the resistance.
