Why is NaCl more soluble than AlCl3?

More polar compounds are more soluble in water. Similarly when the hydration energy is more than the lattice energy the compound is more soluble in water. NaCl is having more hydration energy than lattice energy so its soluble in water quickly than AlCl3, which is having more lattice energy.

Why is NaCl not reactive?

The sodium loses an electron, and the chlorine gains that electron. This reaction is highly favorable because of the electrostatic attraction between the particles. In the process, a great amount of light and heat is released. The resulting salt is mostly unreactive — it is stable.

Why is AlCl3 insoluble in water?

Again, a solution of aluminum chloride is not formed, so dissolution is not occurring. To summarize, in neither case does water added to aluminum chloride produce a solution of aluminum ions and chloride ions and therefore aluminum chloride is not soluble in water.

Which one out of nac1 and mgc1 2is more soluble in water explain?

NaCl is more soluble in water as when water is added NaCl breaks down into Na+ and Cl- as there is only one atom of each. Whereas there is one atom of Mg and 2 atoms of Cl in MgCl2 which makes its separation harded than that of dissolving NaCl.

Why does NaCl dissolve in water but not benzene?

Sodium chloride is an ionic compound and ionic compounds dissolve in polar solvents. Benzene is not a polar solvent since its held by covalent bonds. Since water is a polar solvent, then by virtue of sodium chloride being an ionic compound it will dissolve in the polar solvent water, but will not dissolve in benzene.

Does AlCl3 dissociate in water?

The bond between oxygen and aluminum becomes stronger and bond between hydrogen and oxygen is weaken thus breaks off and forms H+ which is the reason for acidity when AlCl3 dissolves in water. AlCl3 in water dissociates into Al3+ and Cl-.

Why does sodium react with water?

Sodium reacts violently with water because it is much more active than hydrogen. Therefore, a redox reaction between H+ and Na to give H(2) and Na+ is very energetically favorable. So much energy is released that the hydrogen gas released can burn.

What happens to AlCl3 in water?

Anhydrous aluminum chloride (aluminum trichloride, AlCl3) is an odorless, white or yellow crystalline solid that reacts violently with water to liberate hydrogen chloride (HCL) gas. AlCl3 will also sublime readily at 178ºC to yield hydrogen chloride gas.
