Why is it important to separate artificial intelligence and artificial consciousness?
It is possible to simulate intelligence and hence pass the Turing test. However it is not possible to simulate consciousness. The distinction between intelligence and consciousness is important as it makes all the difference when it comes to being evil (i.e. doing harm intentionally).
Can artificial intelligence become self-aware?
One of the pitfalls for machines becoming self-aware is that consciousness in humans is not well-defined enough, which would make it difficult if not impossible for programmers to replicate such a state in algorithms for AI, researchers reported in a study published in October 2017 in the journal Science.
How can Ai be conscious?
In humans, consciousness is implemented in the cerebral cortex which enables us to do introspection. However, this process can be replicated via AI algorithms. AIs can introspect and thus, they are conscious. I could go into more detail on how introspection works but that would take a lot of time and effort.
Do humans have consciousness?
A newborn human will cry when it is cold or hungry, which I believe indicates a rudimentary form of consciousness. Although the world is clearly not ideal, I think that our conscious existence is a net positive. Without consciousness, there would be no appreciation for art or music. Walter Veit: Do humans have consciousness?
When do you think consciousness begins?
I would say that consciousness begins at birth. A newborn human will cry when it is cold or hungry, which I believe indicates a rudimentary form of consciousness. Although the world is clearly not ideal, I think that our conscious existence is a net positive. Without consciousness, there would be no appreciation for art or music.
Why can we introspect on our thoughts?
We can do this because of self-awareness, and only creatures with self-awareness can introspect. In other words, the ability to think about one’s own thoughts is a sign of consciousness. In humans, consciousness is implemented in the cerebral cortex which enables us to do introspection. However, this process can be replicated via AI algorithms.
