Why is it good to conform to society?
We need to interact and establish relationships with others, friends, family, partners. Conforming with the norms of a society makes this process much easier. By definition, conformity is described as “a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group.”
conformity
conformity, the process whereby people change their beliefs, attitudes, actions, or perceptions to more closely match those held by groups to which they belong or want to belong or by groups whose approval they desire. Conformity has important social implications and continues to be actively researched.
Why should we not conform to society?
We shouldn’t have to match up to others, instead we should think about our own wants and needs. We should be comfortable around non-conformity. Not conforming helps us grow emotionally, physically and spiritually because we have freewill to do our own thing. We should not care about what other people think.
What will happen if we did not conform with the rules or norms in our society?
Norms function to provide order and predictability in society. On the whole, people want approval, they want to belong, and those who do not follow the norms will suffer disapproval or may even be outcast from the group. This is how we keep society functioning, not just with direct rules but also expectations.

Why do we conform to norms?
One common explanation for norm conformity is that, if everyone else is choosing to do one thing, it is probably a good thing to do. The other common explanation is that failing to follow a norm may elicit negative social sanctions, and so we conform to norms in an effort to avoid these negative responses.
Why do people conform to other people’s choices?
It is well established that people tend to conform to behaviours that are common among other people. These are known as social norms. Yet our finding that people conform to other’s choices that they know are completely arbitrary cannot be explained by most theories of this social norm effect.
How can social norms be used to promote pro-social behaviour?
Increasingly, social norms are being used to encourage pro-social behaviour. They have been successfully used to encourage healthy eating, increase attendance at doctor appointments, reduce tax evasion, increase towel reuse at hotels, decrease long-term energy use, and increase organ donor registrations.
