Why is hydration important for singers?

Whether we are speaking, singing, or humming, the sound is created by the vibration of our vocal folds. Mucus protects these vocal cords, and staying hydrated ensures that everything is working properly. If you are even slightly dehydrated, your vocal fold tissues may become dry and even permanently injured.

How much water does it take to hydrate vocal cords?

Scherer in a Voice Council Magazine article, drinking eight glasses of water per day is essential to maintaining your vocal cords. Singing is obviously stressful on your vocal cords. Sustained use can cause the folds between the cords to become irritated, causing irritation and degrading performance.

Over a longer time period, drinking water — warm or not — does keep the vocal folds supple and lubricated, by hydrating the tissues. This is not an immediate effect; it’s best to stay hydrated well in advance of singing or speaking.

Can water ruin your voice?

If you drink water that is too hot, the muscles become too relaxed, and can also trigger mucous production which diminishes the quality of a person’s speaking and singing voice. As for drinking cold water, this creates a lot of muscle tension, and as a result restricts a person’s speaking and singing capacity.

Why is water good for the voice?

Water should be a singer’s drink of choice because it lubricates your vocal folds, allowing them to vibrate fully. Staying hydrated doesn’t just help your vocal cords – it brings moisture to your mouth and throat, too. This improves your articulation and clarity when you sing.

How do you keep vocal cords hydrated?

Stay hydrated:

  1. Drink plenty of water, especially when exercising.
  2. If you drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol, balance your intake with plenty of water.
  3. Take vocal naps—rest your voice throughout the day.
  4. Use a humidifier in your home.

Are humidifiers good for your voice?

Dry air is the most common cause of a dry throat. If you’re a singer that struggles with this problem you should definitely buy a good humidifier to resolve this issue. Using a humidifier will add moisture to the air and prevent your vocal cords from getting too dry. It makes singing much more comfortable.

Does cold water make voice deeper?

Why? Because the depth of your voice effectively comes from the size and tension of your vocal chords. Hydrated vocal chords are bigger and therefore result in a lower note. Warm water is better for doing this, since cold water can cause your vocal chords to constrict, which tenses up the sound.

Does water help your voice?

A: The most important thing we can consume to improve vocal health is water. Staying hydrated helps your body produce thin, watery mucus. Your vocal cords vibrate more than 100 times a second when you speak, and they need that mucus to help them stay lubricated. We recommend drinking 64 ounces of water each day.

Is water good for singing?

If you’re wondering what to drink to sing better, the answer is simple: water. Water is one of the best drinks for your singing voice, with herbal teas (but not too hot) in second place. Drink water throughout the day, and keep a water bottle nearby during lessons and rehearsals.
