Why is diamond Colourless?

Colorless diamonds are a rare form. Most diamonds have a faint yellow or brown tint because they are exposed to natural gases that emit color such as boron and nitrogen. When a diamond lacks these impurities from natural gases, it is extremely rare. The rarity of colorless diamonds makes them extremely valuable.

Why is diamond transparent to visible light?

The electrons in the diamond lattice are so tightly bound that they interact weakly with photons. This is similar to the way photons interact with glass. That the atomic interactions are weak and not completely absent gives diamonds (and glass) various refractive, reflective and color properties.

Does graphite have transparency?

“Surprisingly, unlike most other materials, the extra electrons make the graphite more transparent, due to a quantum-mechanical effect.

How is diamond different from graphite?

Graphite and diamond are two of the most interesting minerals. They are identical chemically – both are composed of carbon (C), but physically, they are very different. Graphite is very soft and has a hardness of 1 to 2 on this scale. Diamonds are the hardest known natural substance and have a hardness of 10.

Is diamond transparent translucent or opaque?

Because of its high refrative index (2.5), diamond can reflect and refract light. Therefore, it is a transparent substance. Translucent substance permits the passage of light in such a way that an object cannot be seen clearly through the substance, e.g., frosted glass.

Why are diamond and graphite different colors?

The planar structure of graphite allows electrons to move easily within the planes. This permits graphite to conduct electricity and heat as well as absorb light and, unlike diamond, appear black in color. Answer originally posted May 20, 2002.

Why is a diamond colorless but graphite is black?

As it happens, graphite has the double bonds that tend to create very low lying excited states which means it absorbs basically every color which is why it’s black.

Can diamonds be transparent?

Colored diamonds contain impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration, while pure or nearly pure diamonds are transparent and colorless. Most diamond impurities replace a carbon atom in the crystal lattice, known as a carbon flaw.

Why diamond is hard and transparent?

Carbon atoms in diamond are bonded in a strong tetrahedron pattern making it hard and clear whereas carbon atoms in graphite are bonded in weak covalent bonds making it soft and black. Because of pressure and elevated temperature the carbon becomes hard and chunky.

What are 3 differences between diamond and graphite?

For example, Graphite and diamond are two different allotropes of carbon….Explain the difference in properties of diamond and graphite on the basis of their structures.
