Why is dental care separate from medical care?

The dental and medical fields have been separate since quite a way back into history. The medical field never accepted dentistry as part of their practice, so dentists had to make their own way. With separate schools and a different practice, it’s not surprising that they have separate insurance coverage.

In the 1960s and ’70s, funding for dental research was on the rise, but health care became linked to health insurance, and teeth were not included. “That’s when we started to see a separation because there was no dental insurance as far as I know,” Gutmann says.

Not only can they not pull teeth in an emergency room, it is illegal for anyone other than a dentist to perform an emergency tooth extraction, emergency root canal or any other dental care.
