Why is 0.2\% offset used?

This means that at offset yield, if deforming force is removed, then the material would have undergone permanent plastic deformation of 0.2\% or strain=0.002. This method is usually used for ductile metals like Aluminium which doesn’t have a definite yield point. Hope this helps!

Why is 0.2 proof stress important?

Although as mentioned by others this is not universally accepted, in my opinion the reason that the 0.2\% strain was used for proof stress, is that it offers a more straight forward comparison with the yield stress of steel. Steel has a distinct yield point, that you can use to set a good safety margin before failure.

Why is offset method used?

It is a standard method (acording to ASTM and other standards) for determination of yield stress of materials that do not have clearly visible yield point on stress-strain curve, as dr. Dinaharan said. It allows one to compare yield stress of diferent materials, that is why it is widely used in strength calculations.

Proof stress is determined as the stress corresponding to 0.2\% of strain from the stress-strain curve of the given material. This is the stress value determined for the materials like aluminum, magnesium and copper whose yield point cannot be easily defined.

Offset yield strength is an arbitrary approximation of a material’s elastic limit. It is the stress that corresponds to a point at the intersection of a stress-strain curve and a line which is parallel to a specified modulus of elasticity line. This parallel line is horizontally offset by a predetermined amount.

How do you calculate 0.2 proof stress?

Start drawing a line parallel to the stress-strain curve until it meets the curve at some point on the curve. Draw a horizontal line from the meeting point until it meets the vertical (stress) axis. Measure the value – that will be the yield point stress corresponding to 0.2\% of strain.
