Why does the water in my RV smell bad?

These bacteria develop in hot water and creates hydrogen sulfide as waste. The hydrogen sulfide coming out of the hot water creates what we call a rotten egg smell. The smell could also be caused by a reaction between your magnesium anode rod and your hot water with a high magnesium content.

How do I get rid of the smell in my RV fresh water tank?

The best way to get rid of this is by cleaning and sanitizing your tank.

  1. Fill your fresh water tank up 3/4 full.
  2. Mix 1 cup bleach with 1 gallon of water.
  3. Pour Bleach/Water mixture into the fresh water tank.
  4. Fill fresh water tank full with water.
  5. Turn the water pump on.
  6. Open all faucets until you smell the bleach.

The grey water tank can also have a pungent smell because it could have mold in it. Since these tanks become warm and always moist or wet, they easily get moldy, causing a bad odor in your RV. Grease, dirt, and food waste sticks to the sides of the grey water tank.
