Why does Switzerland still have conscription?

The political system in Switzerland is characterized by the so-called militia-system, where civilian service tasks basically are carried out on a part-time basis. Therefore there is a mandatory service for Compulsory Fire Services and in Swiss civil defense and protection institutions for all inhabitants as well.

Is it mandatory to serve in the military in Austria?

The Austrian Constitution stipulates that military service is compulsory for male Austrian citizens. Female Austrian citizens may voluntarily serve as soldiers. However, given that compulsory military service exists up until one’s 50 year of age, enlistment is still obligatory for them.
