Why does my car not go straight?

Most often cars that are not driving straight are out of alignment and a simple adjustment is all that is needed. In some cases, though, this may not be the only cause. Tires, wheel balance, and other factors can cause the vehicle to drift towards the left or right.

What is Tramlining in a car?

The term “tramlining” is being used to describe when directional control is disrupted by the vehicle’s tendency to follow the longitudinal ruts and/or grooves in the road. Its name could be compared to the tram or trolley driver who does not steer because his vehicle follows the path established by the tracks.

What makes a car swerve?

Worn ball joints will cause the vehicle to track/veer with any rut or groove in the road your vehicle encounters. Worn/loose rack and pinion bushings could affect the direction of the vehicle with any movement steering. Finally, it could be something related to the rear suspension causing your vehicle to swerve.

What can cause tramlining?

The most common source of tramlining has been misaligned wheels. So, wheel alignment is not only limited to curbing the uneven wear of your tyres but also to keep the handling of the car intact. More or less camber (the angle of wheels from its axis) exerts uneven pressure on tyres leading to handling troubles.

What is tramline behavior?

Tramlining is the tendency of a vehicle’s wheels to follow the contours in the surface upon which it runs. The term comes from the tendency of a car’s wheels to follow the normally recessed rails of street trams, without driver input in the same way that the train does. The same effect is sometimes called Nibbling.

Are wheel alignments worth it?

We recommend an alignment after the installation of new tires. This helps you get the most life from your new tires. The most common signs of misalignment are pulling to one side while you’re driving, unusual tire wear and/or a steering wheel that’s off-center even though your vehicle is pointed straight.
