Why does my blocked nose keep switching sides?

The turbinates also go through a process which is known as the nasal cycle. This cycle is where one turbinate increases in size whilst the other decreases and then they swap over. This accounts for why people notice that they have a blocked nose on one side which then swaps to the other side.

What causes both nostrils to clog?

Nasal congestion can be caused by anything that irritates or inflames the nasal tissues. Infections — such as colds, flu or sinusitis — and allergies are frequent causes of nasal congestion and runny nose. Sometimes a congested and runny nose can be caused by irritants such as tobacco smoke and car exhaust.

Why does my nose get blocked on one side?

The main reason for the blocked nose (which is usually both sides but can be worse on one side) is due to enlarged turbinates (medically known as inferior turbinate hypertrophy. The turbinates are sausage-like structures at the side walls of the nose that warm and humidify the air that you breathe in.

What causes one nasal passage to be smaller than the other?

As a result one nasal passage is smaller than the other. This deviation may be present from birth or arises with some injury to the nose during the course of life. Not all people with a deviated septum have a constantly blocked nose. It may only become blocked during a nasal infection or with an allergy.

Can nasal polyps cause a blocked nose?

In some cases, nasal polyps (usually benign inflammatory growths that forms from the lining of the nose and sinuses) can occur. There are many other causes of a blocked nose such as tumours, foreign bodies, systemic disorders etc but these are much less common. I would suggest that you visit an ENT Specialist for an assessment.
