Why does Mangalore receive more rainfall than Chennai?

Since there is no hill range close to Chennai, orographic rainfall is impossible over Chennai. As Southwest monsoon winds blow over Mangalore it gets blocked by western ghats and as it lies in windward side, it gets copious rainfall. Western ghats is the sole reason for Mangalore receiving more rainfall than Chennai!

Why does Chennai receives less rainfall than Mangalore?

1) Mangalore is located on the windward side of the south-west monsoon winds.. By the time, the South-west Monsoon descends on the leeward side, very little moisture is left leaving Chennai to receive less rainfall.

Why does Mangalore receives more rainfall than Bengaluru?

Mangalore receives more rainfall than Bangalore irrespective of the fact that they are at same latitude. Explanation: Due to the low pressure area (ITCZ) in the western Ganga plain region, the southwest winds are attracted towards the Indian subcontinent. When these winds hits the atmosphere, it results in rainfall.

(i) Bay of Bengal branch of South-West monsoon passes parallel to Chennai coast. (ii) Due to the presence of Western Ghat on its way of flow, Arabian sea branch of South-West monsoon could not cross over and give little or no rain in Chennai.

Why does Chennai receives less rainfall through South West monsoon?

The Arabian Sea branch of South West Monsoons strike west ghats, first. After crossing, west ghats, these winds descend down the leeward slope of west ghats where they do not give much rain. So, these winds give less rainfall in Chennai.

Why Mangalore receives more rainfall than Mysore although both are on the same latitude?

Answer: Mangalore experiences more rainfall than Mysore because Mangalore lies on windward side of Western Ghats and Mysore lies on leeward side of the Western Ghats.

Why Chennai receives less rain than Thiruvananthapuram although it has more rainy days?

Chennai receives rain from northeast monsoons during October-November which is not very strong hence gives less rain whereas Thiruvananthapuram Kerala receives very heavy rain from southwest monsoon which are much more powerful. It also gets some rain from the retreating Monsoon.

Why is Mangalore not cold even in the month of December?

Mangalore is a coastal region which experiences moderate climate due to the influence of the sea. It does not experience extreme climate. Hence, Mangalore is not cold even in the month of December.
