Why does Google Earth not show ice at North Pole?

There’s a couple of reasons why the ice around the North Pole is not shown on Google Maps. A commonly cited reason is that the Arctic ice cap is floating on open ocean; there’s no land underneath that reaches sea level.

Is there any ice in the North Pole?

Earth’s North Pole is covered by floating pack ice (sea ice) over the Arctic Ocean. Portions of the ice that do not melt seasonally can get very thick, up to 3–4 meters thick over large areas, with ridges up to 20 meters thick. One-year ice is usually about 1 meter thick.

No one actually lives at the North Pole. Inuit people, who live in the nearby Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, and Russia, have never made homes at the North Pole. The ice is constantly moving, making it nearly impossible to establish a permanent community.

Why doesn’t Google Earth Show ice on top of mountains?

In fact, there doesn’t seem to be any ice up there at all. Because you are not looking at any image there. That is why. Google Earth uses photos composited from many different sources. In wilderness areas with little of interest, you can zoom in all you want to but the photos remain low resolution and you cannot make much out.

Why doesn’t Google Maps show the poles of the Earth?

The answer’s actually pretty simple: Our Earth is round, and not effectively represented by a two-dimensional map. Google Maps uses a Mercator projection, flattening the Earth and stretching it horizontally and vertically, as do most 2D maps. Because of this, either pole invariably gets lost in translation.

What is the ice cap at the North Pole?

Ice Cap implies ice sitting on something. There is no solid body of land at the north pole. The white stuff is sea ice floating on the Arctic Ocean. The ice cap at the south pole is sitting on dry land.

Why do the north and South Poles look different on Earth?

The real reason that the north and south poles look different is that the south pole is covered by a giant land mass, while the north pole isn’t. For a better view of things, open up Google Earth, which has a much more intuitive visualization of the poles.
