Why does Dunkirk switch from night to day?

There are two reasons, emotional and logical. Emotionally, the smash cuts between day and night confuse and disorient the audience, matching the confusion of the characters as they’re harried by stukas and u-boats. At the same time, logically, they make clear that these things are happening at different times.
