Why does Amavasya happen?
Amavasya is of great religious significance in Hinduism. It is considered a perfect time in remembering the ancestors and departed souls of the family and worshipping them. It is believed that, the day when Moonlight is absent, the sunlight reaches them.
What should not eat in Amavasya?
Food items like wheat grains and flour too must be avoided during this time. You must refrain from purchasing wheat especially during the Amavasya of the ‘Bhadra month’. It is said that if you consume the wheat bought on this day, then it directly goes to your ancestors, which is considered inauspicious.
How Purnima and Amavasya occur?
On Poornima day, the moon and the sun are in exactly opposite positions. Thus the entire face of the moon is visible to us and this is what we call the full moon. The amavasya occurs 14-15 days after the Poornima which itself occurs 14-15 days after the previous amavasya.
