For higher wages, increased benefits, shorter hours and improved working conditions are certainly important reasons for joining a union. One basic human need is security. Some unions offer attractive benefits, such as insurance. Peer pressure may also cause workers to join unions.

What Disadvantages do employers have to face from unions?

Another ugly disadvantage that employers have to face is employee strikes. If the employers do not acquiesce to the salaries, benefits or workplace policies requested by the union, the union workers can officially strike. The central laws restrict an employer’s ability to fire a worker in strike.

Should the minimum wage be raised to help unions?

Most unions represent skilled workers, who typically aren’t earning minimum wage. However, raising the minimum wage can help union workers indirectly. If an employer can hire a skilled worker for $20 an hour or an unskilled, minimum-wage worker for $8 an hour, it’s much cheaper to hire the unskilled worker.
