Why do we have north south east and west?

Cardinal directions are probably the most important directions in geography: north, south, east and west. These directions help us orient ourselves wherever we are. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. So in the morning, the sun will be in the east; in the afternoon, it will be in the west.

Does north south east and west exist in space?

There is no north south east west, or up and down in space. north, south, east, and west refer to the Earth’s magnetic or geographic poles, irrelevant in space. up and down implies towards the earth center or away from the earth center, also irrelevant in space.

Why does east and west never meet?

East and west are directions without a position. You have to have a position in order to proceed from it. Once at one of the poles all directions are towards the opposite pole. There is no east or west when at a pole.

A: Actually people did at one time, mainly in the days before the compass, use such terms as “eastnorth” and “westsouth.” In fact, Old English versions of “eastnorth” and “westsouth” coexisted with early versions of “northeast” and “southwest,” though the pairs apparently had different meanings.

“North was rarely put at the top for the simple fact that north is where darkness comes from,” he says. “West is also very unlikely to be put at the top because west is where the sun disappears. Confusingly, early Chinese maps seem to buck this trend.

For world maps, because we often put them on a wall, north really is up, and south is down, even though on earth those directions are both horizontal. Sometimes people print maps in other orientations so they make more sense.
