Why do truck drivers not use the clutch?

When you take the transmission OUT of gear, without a clutch, there is pressure on the on the input shaft, by the power coming being transmitted from the wheels all the way to the output shaft. When you use a clutch, you disconnect the power coming from the Engine back to the input shaft.

How do truckers shift without clutch?

The most skillful drivers can shift non-synchronous transmissions without using the clutch by bringing the engine to exactly the right RPM in neutral before attempting to complete a shift. Some truck (lorry) drivers use this technique with the higher gears when at work.

When skipping a gear with a manual transmission, it should be noted the revs will take slightly longer to drop from the high revs to the lower revs.

Drivers are taught to “Double Clutch” or press and release the clutch twice for each gear shift. If you’re floating gears it means you’re simply shifting without using the clutch at all.
