Why do the Dursleys let Harry come back?

Lily’s sacrificial spell makes her family and their house protected from Voldemort. If Harry leaves the house for good the protection is lost and this puts Vernon and Petunia and their diddykins in danger too. This could be a reason they allow Harry back.

Why did Dumbledore want Harry to go back to the Dursleys?

Harry had to return to Dursley’s every year before his seventeenth birthday because of an ancient charm that was placed on him by Dumbledore when he was bought to the Dursley’s doorstep. As long as he was in Petunia’s care, Voldemort couldn’t hurt him. She shared the blood with Lily and their blood became his refuge.

Why did the Dursleys not kick Harry out?

The reason was of course because of the blood protection that Lily had given Harry when she sacrificed herself to save him from Voldemort. He needed to live with a blood relative to keep him safe from Voldemort. As much as Petunia didn’t like Harry’s magical abilities she didn’t hate him enough to let him die.

Why did Aunt Petunia let Harry stay?

Because she used to love Lily when they were little and Dumbledore explained that by allowing Harry to live with them would save his life. She may have resented him, but she didn’t want him to be dead on her account! Because she wasn’t given a chance to say “no”, but she had loved her sister, even if she envied her.

After the death of Voldemort, Order of the Phoenix brought back Dursleys from their protection to their original home in Privet Drive. Harry never went back to Privet Drive after his 17th b’day.
